Having spent a week on a tropical island early this month, there was no better time to test out some of our sunscreens. The tests were tough, they included Touch & Feel, Easy to Wash, Water (chlorine and sea water) Resistance and Protection.

The sunscreens I brought with me were: eco logical face sunscreen, eco logical body sunscreen, Green Foot Mama Organic Sun and Kelapa Organics SPF15 face moisturiser. Let’s see which ones survived the tropical sun and the turquoise sea!

Rating 5 is the most favourable.

Eco logical face sunscreen (SPF30+)

HOAP Skincare - Eco - Natural Sunscreen Face

This is my all-time favourite since I discovered it 2 years ago, it has a relatively light fluffy texture and it mixes well by simply shaking the bottle before application. This sunscreen is not at all greasy and is super-fast absorbing, it’s even better than any chemical sunscreen that I have used in the past. To remove, all it takes is a bit of makeup remover or cleansing oil and it will come off nice and clean. Because it’s so light and has such a clean feel to it, I actually cannot tell if it’s water resistant at all. Therefore, I re-apply it every 2 hours or when I finish any water activities – same as all other sunscreens tell you to do.

After a week, I did get some colour on my face but I did not get sun burnt at all. Overall, it’s an absolute winner for me!

Eco logical body sunscreen (SPF30+)

HOAP Skincare | eco - Natural Sunscreen Body 100g

Unlike the one for the face, this is heavier in texture and therefore, to mix it before application, you actually need to give the tube a good squeeze to ensure that it’s well mixed. When it first touches the skin it can feel a bit heavy and greasy but give it a minute or so (depends on the thickness of your application) it should be absorbed and leaves no greasy feel at all. The good thing about this it’s fairly water resistant, once you exit the water you can see the water drops sitting on the skin and sliding off. For this reason, it’s a bit more difficult to wash it off within the first few hours of application, assuming that you haven’t been active. Depends on the activities that you will be doing and how much you sweat, I do recommend to re-apply every 3-4 hours.

After a week of an average 4 hours in the sun and 3 hours in water on a daily basis, I did get quite a bit of colour on my body but I did not get sun burnt at all when I used this product. Overall, I like this one very much as it doesn’t irritate my skin after multiple applications throughout a day.

Green Foot Mama Organic Sun (SPF15)

GreenFootMama Organic Sun | HOAP Skincare

This is the only sunscreen that has a delicious chocolate scent to it. It’s a balm like texture below 20 degrees Celsius, it will soften to a thickened cream texture when the temperature gets warmer. It’s always easier to apply when it’s softer but all it takes is a bit of rubbing between the palms to warm it up during cooler days.

This sunscreen contains a higher percentage of Zinc Oxide (30%) than the eco logical sunscreen (20%-22%) but it has a lower SPF because it was manufactured to retain the benefits of some of the fragile ingredients. Hence it can be used as after sun care to sooth and nourish sun damaged skin. If I have to rate the most water resistant sunscreen of the four, this is definitely the champion, and thus it can be quite difficult to get the product off at the end of the day. If you don’t mind to smell like chocolate in bed, you probably don’t need to worry too much about washing it all off, it’s after sun care anyway. It’s definitely greasier than the others and it feels like you are wearing a thin film layer on your skin for a little while.

I used it for a whole day, kayaking, hiking and snorkelling, re-applied twice during a 5.5 hour duration (that’s 3 layers) and I got sun burnt on my shoulders, arms and décolletage. However my sun burn was not at all painful afterwards and I believe it’s the contribution of the after sun care ingredients.

I recommend using this if you are not “full-on” sun baking, use a small amount on each application and re-apply as often as you can.

Kelapa Organics SPF Face Moisturiser (SPF15)

HOAP Skincare - Kelapa - SPF Moisturiser

It’s a moisturiser that has sun protection, I need to make sure that we are clear about the main purpose of this product before we go on with the comparison. It does the job as a moisturiser and it is a little bit heavier than Kelapa’s other moisturisers (without SPF). This is not designed for you to use and then go out for “full-on” sun baking. It’s designed for everyday use, which requires only a little sun protection when commuting to school or work.

I used this daily for my face and body after I finished water activities, washed off layers of sunscreens and before heading to the pool for a drink or two at sunset. It’s a perfect pamper for tired skin and it gives enough protection before the sun goes down.

What do you first look at when you pick up a beauty product from the shelf? I’m all about ingredients so I take it very seriously when finding out what goes into beauty products, foods and even commodities. Skin care products that contain minimum or no chemicals are always a big plus.

Moisturisers for example, are one of the skin care products that may contain a troubling amount of chemicals, especially the ones in the form of cream. Understanding the ingredients listed on the product label is as important as knowing what to have for lunch every day. A little while ago I came across Mettā Skincare – Australian made skin care products that do not contain preservatives or any added chemicals. Their whole range of products consist of body oil, body butter, hand balm, face balm and lip balm. As you can probably tell, all of the products are oil based but don’t worry because they are not greasy.  Being someone who has dry skin, I am going to share three of my favourite products from Mettā Skincare.

Hand Balm

This is probably the oiliest one but it absorbs fast, a little goes a long way, suitable for very dry skin. This is perfect for me because I have devilishly dry hands, if you are lucky to have beautiful hands, rub a tiny bit into your hands and enjoy the elegant beautifully scented French Lavender.

This amazingly nourishing hand balm is also great as a heel balm, apply a generous amount after a pedicure then wear a pair of comfortable thick socks before bed, you will wake up as if you are stepping on clouds!

Ingredients: Olive Oil, Shea Butter, Beeswax, Calendula Flowers, Lavender Essential Oil.

Body Butter

Available in two scents – French Lavender or Vanilla (mine is lavender) – this body butter has an interesting whipped-butter like texture, melts on touching the skin and yes it absorbs very fast and is not at all greasy! This is a very big jar considering the amount you use each time, so paying the retail price of $47 could actually last you for up to 6 months or longer. Using the healing and conditioning properties of oils, this body butter can help to stop irritated skin. While I keep my Hand Balm in the office, this works as my hand balm as well when I’m home. When I’m really tired before bed I will even use it as my lip balm!

Ingredients: Shea Butter, Grapeseed Oil, Cacao Seed Butter, Jojoba Seed Oil, Coconut Oil Lavender Essential (or Vanilla Oleoresin).

Lip Balm

Having cracked dry lips is never fun and they can be a makeup nightmare. I have used many lip balms and guess what, to find the perfect lip balm that suits our individual needs is not as simple as it sounds. I can’t stand lip balms that are too greasy or too waxy, they can’t have artificial flavours nor fragrance and most importantly they have to be able to restore and retain moisture for my lips… Think I’m fussy? Yes, I am. Why not?!

This lip balm meets all the criteria and has a light Lavender scent to it, I apply a generous amount at night before bed and the next morning I will have well prepared plump lips ready for even the toughest lip colours. For those who do not like to use lip balm prior to applying lip colours, this is a must-have. Compared to the normal tube lip balms, this 14g jar is almost 3 times the amount, why not use it as a cuticle balm?

Ingredients: jojoba Seed Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, Beeswax, Coconut Oil, Cacao Seed Butter, Lavender Essential Oil.

HOAP Skincare_Metta Skincare 2All three of mine are lavender scented, the Hand Balm has the strongest Lavender throw out of the three and then followed by the Body Butter.

Last but not least, Mettā Skincare donates 50% of their profit to support not-for-profit organisations working towards making a world free from extreme poverty.

BasiK Organics is an Australian brand owned by Kristen – a mother of two. The philosophy of BasiK Organics is using simple organic ingredients where possible to produce products that are safe and effective for the whole family, even babies. Most of BasiK Organics’ products are oil-based and we can pronounce every one of the ingredients on the product label.

Some of us may not be so fond of oil-based products thinking that they might be too heavy or too greasy. I have been using BasiK Organics Cream and Belly Butter for a few months now and I want to let you know how I feel about these products.

Cream (Vegan)

Very simple ingredients, this product consists of Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, Jojoba Oil, Avocado Oil and Calendula infused Sunflower Oil, all of them are certified organic ingredients.

Normally cream is a combination of water and oil, where this Cream is waterless so eliminates the use of emulsifiers and preservatives, though it still has a similar consistency to cream. This balm (I will call this a balm as it’s technically not cream) is on the oilier side compared to the Belly Butter, it’s suitable for drier skin or irritated skin. Initially I found this balm to be a bit too oily for me and I didn’t like it as much until it healed my bad rash.

I was trying on different new products one day and either it was a product or a combination of different products, but I had this really bad red and extremely itchy rash on my body and I couldn’t get rid of it. I tried everything (including not using anything) for a week, even the so-called miracle Tamanu oil couldn’t make my rash disappear (it did though stop it from going worse). After a good long week my skin became very dry and ugly, I looked through my cupboard and saw this BasiK Organics Cream I thought to use it to soothe my dry and itchy skin until I could get some Hay Fever tablets the next day. Like other miracle stories, my crazy rash was calmed down when I got up the next day, all red dots turned brown and were no longer as itchy as the previous week! Now you will think, to go with the story line, I have ‘Before and After’ pictures to show you. No! I actually can’t show you ‘Before and After’ pictures as I really didn’t expect this to happen! I didn’t expect the week long rash would have come down completely over night with this natural chemical free balm!

Three days after using the BasiK Organics Cream my rash had completely disappeared and my skin was no longer dry. Since then I have been in love with this balm and yes I have finished one whole jar! It’s a bit oilier than others but it absorbs fast and a little goes a long way.

Belly Butter (Vegan)

If you are someone who has normal to oily skin and you really cannot stand the oily feeling, I get it and here’s another product of BasiK Organics that works its magic by using simple natural ingredients – Belly Butter.

Similar to Cream, this Belly Butter is a waterless formula and uses 100% certified organic ingredients, it contains Shea Butter, Cocoa Butter, Jojoba Oil, Sesame Oil, Avocado Oil and Aloe Vera Gel. It’s suitable for normal skin, this butter is a lot lighter than Cream but absorbs as fast, if not faster. The name says it all, Belly Butter was designed for pregnant mums for expanding baby bellies, although it’s also great for areas prone to stretch marks including breasts, hips and thighs. I am not a mum so I cannot tell you how this Belly Butter works for stretch marks, although Shea and Cocoa Butter are effective in treating stretch marks.

This Belly Butter has been my favourite body moisturiser until I discovered the magical healing power of the Cream. I still use this as my moisturiser during humid days as it’s so fast absorbing and doesn’t leave any grease behind.

What do the ingredients do?

When I was looking at the formula I couldn’t believe how effective BasiK Organics’ products are, after using them for months and proving that they really work, I realised that Kristen has used the healing properties of each ingredient. The following information about the ingredients is from the official website of BasiK Organics.

Shea and Coco Butter – add moisture to the skin and are effective in treating skin conditions including stretch marks, scarring, eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis and skin discolouration.
